Gojō lies in the southwest of Nara Prefecture, where the Yoshino River runs west toward Wakayama and becomes the Kinokawa. The urban core occupies a stretch of flat land along the river, and the map shows it clearly. Streets are packed into the valley floor, the railway and main road run parallel to the water, and hills close in from both sides.
Most of the city's territory is mountain. After merging with neighbouring villages in 2005, Gojō reaches deep into the Kii Mountains, so beyond the town the map becomes a thin network of roads that follow rivers through steep valleys. Nearer the centre, the old merchant quarter of Shinmachi keeps a row of traditional townhouses, and the surrounding slopes are known for persimmon orchards.
