Gose lies in the south-west of Nara Prefecture, where the flat Nara Basin meets the mountains that separate it from Osaka. Mount Kongō and Mount Katsuragi rise along the western side of the town, and from above, the map shows a clear line between the settled plain and forested slopes. Rice fields and small villages fill the space between.
The area is one of the oldest settled parts of Japan, linked in tradition to the ancient Kamo clan, and several old shrines stand at the foot of the mountains. The town centre includes Gose-machi, a historic merchant quarter with narrow streets and traditional houses that grew along an old road.
