Gravina di Catania lies just north of Catania in eastern Sicily, on the lower slopes of Mount Etna. It is part of a chain of towns that has grown together on the rising ground above the city, and from above, the built-up area appears nearly continuous. Streets climb the slope in a series of short, winding segments, with dense blocks between them.
Etna defines this landscape. Lava flows over the centuries have shaped the terrain, and much of the local building stone is dark volcanic basalt. The town grew rapidly in the twentieth century as Catania expanded, turning an older agricultural village into a residential suburb with a busy road network.
