Great Barrier Island, known in Māori as Aotea, lies northeast of Auckland on the outer edge of the Hauraki Gulf. It is the largest island in the gulf, and its shape is complex: a mountainous spine down the middle, deep inlets and harbours on the western side, and long open beaches facing the Pacific on the east.
There is no mains electricity grid, and residents rely on solar power and other off-grid systems. In 2017 the island was named a Dark Sky Sanctuary, among the first in the world, recognising its exceptionally dark night skies. Hirakimata, also called Mount Hobson, is the highest point, rising through native forest near the centre.
