Waiheke lies in the Hauraki Gulf, a ferry ride from central Auckland. Its outline is very irregular: long headlands, deep bays and small coves cut into every side. The western end, around the ferry wharf at Matiatia and the village of Oneroa, has the densest pattern of streets. Further east the roads become fewer and wind between farmland and hills.
The island is known for its vineyards and beaches. Onetangi, on the north coast, is one of its longest stretches of sand. Many people live on Waiheke and commute to Auckland by ferry, so the western villages have ordinary residential street grids.
