Guabo, often called El Guabo, is a town in the province of El Oro in southern Ecuador, on the flat coastal lowlands north of Machala. The land around it is some of the most productive banana country in Ecuador. On the map the town sits within a vast grid of plantations, drainage channels and farm roads that reaches toward the coastal mangroves.
The town itself follows a regular grid, with a central park and blocks laid out in straight rows. Rivers coming down from the Andes cross the plain nearby, and their winding courses contrast with the rigid geometry of the fields. The main coastal highway links Guabo to Machala and to the port that ships bananas abroad.
