Gulgam lies in the north of the Kashmir valley, in the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, close to the mountains that ring the valley. The settlement is spread across fairly level land, with homes, lanes and small markets set among fields and orchards. On a map it appears as a loose cluster of built-up areas connected by roads that follow streams and field edges.
The surrounding landscape is defined by high ridges and forested slopes, which rise steeply around this part of the valley.
