Haomen is the county seat of Menyuan Hui Autonomous County, in the northeast of Qinghai province. It sits in the Datong River valley, where the Qilian Mountains open into a wide basin at close to three thousand metres. From above, the town is a small, tight cluster of streets on flat valley ground, with the mountains holding their distance on both sides.
The street pattern is simple and easy to read. A few main roads carry traffic through the centre, and shorter blocks fill the spaces between them. Past the edges, the fine lines of town streets give way to the looser shapes of fields, farm tracks and watercourses.
