Itezhi-Tezhi is defined by water held back. The dam on the Kafue River created a large reservoir, and on the map it's the dominant shape: a wide, irregular sheet of water with a crinkled shoreline and inlets reaching into the bush. The town sits near the dam, a small cluster of streets next to far larger natural outlines.
The dam was built to regulate the Kafue's flow for hydroelectric power further downstream. The reservoir lies next to Kafue National Park, one of the largest national parks in Africa. As a result the land around the town is mostly open country with little built on it, crossed by a few roads and tracks leading to the park and to the rest of the province.
