Janeng is a village in the South-East District of Botswana, in the south of the country near the border with South Africa. From above, it has the open, low-density pattern typical of settlements in this region: homesteads set on generous plots, a loose web of roads and tracks, and wide areas of bush and grazing land in between.
The South-East District is the smallest of Botswana's districts by area but among the most densely settled, lying close to Gaborone and the main routes to South Africa. Villages here have grown steadily, and their maps record that growth through new plots added at the edges and tracks that gradually become roads.
