Jāsim lies in the Daraa governorate of southern Syria, on the Hauran plain, a broad volcanic tableland known for its dark basalt stone and fertile soils. The terrain is largely open and gently rolling, and on a map the town appears as a compact core with streets spreading outward in an irregular pattern.
The town has a long past. It is traditionally considered the birthplace of Abu Tammam, one of the great classical Arabic poets of the ninth century.
