Jolo is the capital of Sulu province and the main town of the island that shares its name. It sits on the northern coast, where a harbour opens to the Sulu Sea. On a map the settlement is a tight coastal cluster: streets pack close to the waterfront, and the town thins out quickly as the land rises towards the volcanic interior.
For centuries Jolo was the seat of the Sultanate of Sulu, a maritime power whose trade reached across the southern Philippines, Borneo and beyond. In the late nineteenth century the Spanish built a small walled town here, often described as one of the smallest walled cities in the world, and its former footprint remains part of the centre.
