Józefów lies on the right bank of the Vistula, just southeast of Warsaw. It is a town where houses and forest share the same ground. The streets form a loose, mostly rectilinear pattern cut through pine woods, and many plots are still wooded. On the map, the built-up area and the forest blend into each other and never become a dense urban block.
The Świder river flows through the town to the Vistula. Along its banks, the area is known for świdermajer villas. These are wooden summer houses with carved decoration, built from the late nineteenth century when Warsaw residents came here for the pine air. A railway line runs through the town towards the capital.
