Kaga-Bandoro is the capital of Nana-Grébizi prefecture in the central part of the Central African Republic. From above, it is a low, open town set in wooded savanna. Roads converge on the centre from several directions, and houses and compounds spread along them in loose clusters, surrounded by fields and patches of trees.
In the colonial period the town was known as Fort-Crampel. Its position on the road network made it a regional hub for trade and administration, and it remains an important stop on the route toward the north of the country. Streams and seasonal watercourses cross the surrounding land, and their green lines stand out in the dry season.
