Kaminoyama lies just south of Yamagata city, in a basin framed by mountains, with the Zao range rising to the east. For centuries it combined three roles: a castle town, a post station on the Ushu Kaido road, and a hot-spring resort. All three still shape the streets you see on a map.
The reconstructed Kaminoyama Castle sits on a rise near the centre, and the old town spreads around it, with the former highway threading through as a long, slightly winding spine. Onsen inns cluster in several districts, and orchards and rice fields fill the flatter land beyond the edge of town.

The historic post road runs through Kaminoyama as a long, narrow thread, lined by the older part of town and easy to trace across the map from north to south.
Mountain basin
