Karori lies in a valley west of central Wellington, reached through a short road tunnel and over the hills from the city. It is one of the largest suburbs in New Zealand, and the map shows a long main road running along the valley floor with residential streets climbing the slopes on either side.
At the city end of the valley, the Zealandia ecosanctuary occupies the catchment of the old Karori reservoirs, protected by a predator-proof fence and home to native birds reintroduced to the mainland. Karori Cemetery, one of the country's oldest large cemeteries, fills another green area near the suburb's eastern edge.
