Keren lies in the highlands of Eritrea's Anseba region, at roughly 1,400 metres, in a basin ringed by rugged, bare mountains. On a map the town appears as a cluster of streets filling the valley floor, with the terrain pressing in from every side. The roads that reach it have to wind through passes, and that sense of enclosure is the first thing the eye notices.
The town grew as a crossroads between the coast, the capital Asmara and the western lowlands, and its layout still reflects that role. Main roads converge on a compact centre with a regular street pattern from the Italian colonial period, while newer quarters spread more loosely toward the slopes. The mountains around Keren were the site of a decisive battle in 1941 during the East African campaign.
