Koelwār stands beside the Son River in Bihar's Bhojpur district, upstream of the point where the Son meets the Ganges. On a map the river dominates. Its broad channel is full of shifting sandbars and braided streams and is far wider than the town beside it. The settlement forms a compact knot of lanes pressed against the approaches to the crossing.
The town is best known for the Koilwar Bridge, a long rail-and-road crossing opened in 1862 and one of the oldest major bridges in India. In black and white it reads as a single decisive line across the pale expanse of the riverbed. Railway and highway converge on it from both sides, drawing the eye straight to the centre of the sheet.
