Kraśnik lies in the Lublin Voivodeship of eastern Poland, in the valley of the Wyżnica River. The town has two distinct parts, and the map makes that division clear. The older part, around the market square, has irregular streets that follow the valley, while the northern district of Kraśnik Fabryczny grew in the twentieth century around a large industrial plant, with a much more regular layout.
The old town holds the historic centre, with churches and a market square, and the Wyżnica winds past it through meadows and a small reservoir. Kraśnik Fabryczny, built on higher ground, is organised in blocks of housing estates and straight avenues. Between the two runs a band of green and open space. In 1914, the area saw one of the first major battles on the Eastern Front of the First World War.
