Kropyvnytskyi lies in the heart of Ukraine, on the banks of the Inhul River where it meets its tributary, the Suhokleia. The rivers carve shallow valleys through the flat steppe, and the city has grown along and between them. The central districts follow a fairly regular grid laid out in the nineteenth century, while the edges spread out into private houses and industrial areas.
The city began in 1754 as the Fortress of St Elizabeth, built to guard the southern frontier of the Russian Empire, and was later known as Yelysavetgrad and then Kirovohrad before adopting its current name in 2016. It is closely associated with the birth of professional Ukrainian theatre: the first professional Ukrainian troupe was formed here in 1882 under Marko Kropyvnytskyi.

Two river valleys
The Inhul and Sukhokleia rivers meet near the centre, and their winding courses with green banks divide the city into distinct districts, crossed by a series of bridges.
Central grid
The nineteenth-century centre is laid out on straight, perpendicular streets, contrasting with the curves of the rivers and the looser pattern of the outer districts.
