La Línea de la Concepción occupies the neck of land that joins the Spanish mainland to Gibraltar. From above, the city fits between two shores: the Bay of Algeciras, also called the Bay of Gibraltar, to the west, and the open Mediterranean to the east. Its streets form a fairly regular grid across the flat sand. The border runs along the southern edge, and beyond it lies Gibraltar's airport runway.
The name comes from the line of Spanish fortifications built across the isthmus in the eighteenth century, facing British Gibraltar. The city grew up behind that line. The La Línea de la Concepción map poster shows this unusual position clearly, with a whole town pressed between two seas and an international frontier.
On a monochrome print, the strip of land stands out sharply. Shorelines run close together, the grid fills the space between them, and the broad runway cuts across just beyond the border. The Bay of Algeciras lies to the west and the Mediterranean to the east. Their parallel edges frame the street grid like brackets on the print.

The frontier with Gibraltar marks the southern edge of the city. Just beyond it, the airport runway crosses the isthmus as a bold straight line.
