Lahnstein lies where the Lahn flows into the Rhine, a few kilometres south of Koblenz in Rhineland-Palatinate. The confluence divides the town into two parts. Niederlahnstein lies north of the Lahn and Oberlahnstein to the south, and the two were separate towns until they merged in 1969. On a map the two rivers form a clear T, with streets fitted along both.
The town is at the northern end of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of steep, wooded slopes and castles. Burg Lahneck stands on the hillside above the Lahn, and the Martinsschloss sits by the Rhine in Oberlahnstein. Railway lines and roads run along the riverbanks, squeezed between the water and the valley sides.
A Lahnstein map poster shows a town shaped almost entirely by its rivers. The wide Rhine runs down one edge, the narrower Lahn cuts in from the east, and the older centres, with their irregular street patterns, cluster close to the water. Newer districts climb the slopes, following the curves of the terrain.
