L'Aquila stands on a hill above the Aterno valley, with the Gran Sasso massif rising to the north. It was founded in the thirteenth century. Tradition holds that it was formed by the union of the castles of the surrounding countryside, a story remembered in the Fontana delle 99 Cannelle, the fountain of ninety-nine spouts.
From above, the historic centre is compact and clearly bounded by the line of its old walls. Streets run along and across the slope, opening into squares and churchyards. At the edge stands the Spanish Fort, a massive square fortress with angled bastions that is unmistakable even at small scale.
The city was badly damaged by the earthquake of 2009, and its long reconstruction continues. An L'Aquila map poster records the enduring plan: the walled core, the Basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio just outside it, and the newer districts spreading down into the valley.

The old city is contained within the line of its medieval walls. Its dense streets and piazzas form a clear, compact core on the slope.
Collemaggio
The Basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio, where Pope Celestine V was crowned in 1294, sits just beyond the old centre. A broad lawn opens in front of it.
