Laval is the capital of the Mayenne department in western France, built on both banks of the river Mayenne. The historic centre rises on the western slope, where the Vieux-Château, a medieval castle with a prominent keep, overlooks the water. The painter Henri Rousseau, known as Le Douanier, was born here in 1844.
The river runs roughly north to south through town and is crossed by a series of bridges, including the medieval Pont Vieux. Towpaths and locks follow the river upstream and downstream, a legacy of the time it was canalised for boats. The railway crosses the valley on a tall viaduct, a strong straight line in an otherwise curving landscape.
On a Laval map poster the old town is a tight knot of irregular streets near the castle, while later districts spread out in wider, straighter blocks on both banks. The river splits the composition cleanly, the bridges stitch it back together, and parks and gardens on the slopes add softer patches.
