Levin is the main town of the Horowhenua district, on the North Island of New Zealand, and from above it looks like a textbook rural service town. State Highway 1 and the North Island Main Trunk railway run straight through, and the streets spread out on either side in a regular grid. To the east the land rises towards the Tararua foothills, and to the west it runs flat to the coast.
Just west of the town lies Lake Horowhenua, a shallow lake of great significance to local Māori, which appears on the map as a soft rounded shape at the edge of the grid. Beyond it, farmland and market gardens run out to the Tasman Sea coast. The district is known for horticulture, and much of the flat land around town is given over to vegetables and farms.
