Liulin is the seat of Jonê County in the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Gansu, set in the valley of the Tao River at the north-eastern edge of the Tibetan plateau. Mountains rise on either side, and the town has grown lengthways along the river, with streets running parallel to the water and only a little room to spread outward.
That setting gives the map a strong direction. The river draws a long curve across the sheet, the town follows it in a narrow band, and bridges link the two banks at intervals. Beyond the last buildings, roads climb into valleys that lead to villages and monasteries in the surrounding highlands.
