Mahē is a small town on the Malabar coast. On land it is surrounded by Kerala, but it is administered as part of the Union Territory of Puducherry. It was a French settlement until the 1950s, one of several scattered outposts France held in India, and traces of that past remain in its administration and some of its public buildings.
The town sits at the mouth of the river that shares its name, where it enters the Arabian Sea. On the map the river forms a clear edge, and the coastline runs north to south beside a close network of lanes and roads that fill the small territory. Because the town is so compact, it is easy to fit the whole of it into one frame.
