Maizhokunggar, also written Meldro Gungkar, is a county seat east of Lhasa in the Tibet Autonomous Region. It sits in the valley of the Lhasa River, well above 3,500 metres, and from above the settlement is long and narrow. It is pressed between the river and the mountainsides, with the main road running along the valley floor toward the east.
The road through town is part of the long highway that links Lhasa with eastern Tibet and Sichuan, and it shapes almost everything on the map. Streets branch off it in short, regular blocks. Fields line the flatter ground by the water, and beyond them steep, mostly empty slopes define the valley.
A Maizhokunggar map poster is spare by nature. The road from Lhasa passes straight through town and acts as its spine. Most streets connect directly to it, so the whole settlement reads as one linear form.
Valley walls
Mountain slopes rise close on both sides and leave large blank areas on the poster. That emptiness is part of the picture and conveys the scale of the high plateau.
