Valley settlement
The town stretches along the valley floor. That produces an elongated outline that follows the river rather than spreading in all directions.

Majie Map Poster & Print
Majie is a town in southern Gansu Province, in China. It lies in the mountainous country where the Loess Plateau gives way to the ranges on the edge of Sichuan. As in most settlements in this terrain, the town follows the valley. On a map, it appears as a narrow band of streets and buildings along the flat ground next to a river.
The surrounding land dictates the shape. Steep slopes rise on both sides and leave little room for expansion, so the town grows lengthwise. Roads follow the valley, and smaller tracks climb into side valleys. Fields occupy terraces and patches of level ground wherever they can.
A Majie map poster conveys how strongly geography shapes daily life here. A thin line of streets threads through a large empty space, following the course of the water. It is a simple image, but a revealing one, and the minimalist style suits it well.

River course
A watercourse runs through the valley beside the town. It is the natural axis around which the streets and roads are organised.
Mountain slopes
Steep, largely unbuilt slopes surround the settlement. On the poster they leave wide blank areas around the narrow ribbon of town.
