Marataízes lies on the southern coast of Espírito Santo, and its map is shaped by the Atlantic. The town extends along the shoreline, with streets running parallel to the beach and short cross streets leading down to the sand. Behind the coastal strip the land is low, with lagoons and wetland areas that break up the built-up area and create irregular pockets of water inland.
The town has long been a summer destination for families from Espírito Santo and neighbouring Minas Gerais, and its population grows substantially during the holiday season.
