Marikana lies in North West province, between Rustenburg and Brits, on the western limb of the Bushveld Complex, the geological formation that holds most of the world's known platinum resources. Mining shapes the town and its surroundings. On a map, shafts, processing plants and large tailings dams form distinct geometric shapes across the open veld.
The settlement pattern is mixed. There is a small formal town, mine housing and extensive informal settlements where dense, irregular paths weave between homes. Roads and railway lines link the mines to Rustenburg and Pretoria, and the ridge of the Magaliesberg runs to the south, adding a long line of relief to the landscape.
In August 2012 the area became known around the world when police shot dead 34 striking mineworkers near a hill outside the town, an event remembered as the Marikana massacre. A Marikana map poster records the place as it is: a working landscape of mines and communities in the platinum belt.

The Magaliesberg range runs south of the town. Its long ridge line frames the mining landscape and adds natural relief to the composition.
