Maros is the seat of Maros Regency in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, just north of the city of Makassar. The town sits on a low coastal plain crossed by the Maros River. From above, the river curves through the settlement, and roads and rice fields fan out towards the hills.
East of town, the land rises into one of the most dramatic karst landscapes in Southeast Asia. The limestone hills of Bantimurung–Bulusaraung National Park are known for waterfalls, butterflies and caves. Some of those caves hold hand stencils and painted figures that are among the oldest known rock art in the world. Makassar's main airport also lies within the regency.
