Martos lies in the province of Jaén in Andalusia, a region known worldwide for olive oil, and the town is one of its leading producers. Above it rises the Peña de Martos, a large limestone outcrop that dominates the skyline and once carried a castle watching over the surrounding countryside.
From above, the town spreads across the lower slopes of this rock. The older streets climb and turn to follow the gradient, forming a dense, irregular pattern, while newer districts extend onto flatter land below. All around, the olive groves continue for kilometres, their rows forming a fine, regular texture.
