Mieres is in central Asturias, in the valley of the Caudal River, and its shape is dictated by the landscape. The valley is narrow and the mountains are steep, so the town stretches along the river and the main road and rail line instead of spreading out. On a map it is a long, thin ribbon of streets squeezed between wooded slopes.
For well over a century Mieres was one of the centres of the Asturian coal basin. Mines, rail sidings and workers' housing shaped the valley floor, and hamlets were scattered up the side valleys. Many of the mines have closed, but the linear layout remains: the river, the road and the railway running side by side, with streets fitted in between.

Linear town
With little flat land available, Mieres stretches along the valley floor in a long band of streets. On the map it is much longer than it is wide.
