Montecchio Maggiore lies west of Vicenza, where the last spurs of the hills drop onto the flat Venetian plain. Its old town clusters at the foot of a ridge. On top of the ridge stand two medieval castles, known locally as the castles of Romeo and Juliet because of the story's connection with the Montecchi name.
Alte Ceccato, down on the plain, grew up around twentieth-century industry and takes its name from the Ceccato works established there. Its streets are straighter and more open, and they are organised around the main road and the A4 motorway between Milan and Venice. The town is also home to Villa Cordellina Lombardi, an eighteenth-century villa with frescoes by Giambattista Tiepolo.
