Mudkhed lies in Nanded district in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, on the flat, black-soil plains of the Deccan. The town is best known as a railway junction, where lines branch toward different parts of the region. From above, the tracks and station yard form the strongest shapes on the map, with the town's streets arranged around them.
The Godavari river flows not far away, one of the great rivers of peninsular India, crossing the plain toward Nanded and beyond. Around Mudkhed the land is given over to fields, divided by tracks and small watercourses.
