Murayama sits in the basin of the same name in central Yamagata Prefecture, and its map is shaped by open farmland more than dense streets. The Mogami River, one of the major rivers of northern Japan, curves along the western side of the city, while mountains rise to the east. Between them lies a patchwork of paddies and villages connected by long, straight rural roads.
The urban centre gathers around the railway, where the Yamagata Shinkansen stops at Murayama Station. Here the street pattern tightens into a small grid of shops and houses, then quickly relaxes into scattered settlements along the roads that radiate across the valley floor. Irrigation channels and field boundaries add a fine, regular texture to the areas in between.
