Nakło nad Notecią sits in the Noteć valley in northern Poland, west of Bydgoszcz. The name means Nakło on the Noteć, and the river shapes the map. It runs through a wide, flat valley on the town's southern side, with meadows and drainage channels on either bank and the town's streets rising a little above it.
Nakło is the western end of the Bydgoszcz Canal, built in the 1770s under Frederick the Great. The canal links the Noteć to the Brda, and through them the Vistula basin to the Oder. The waterway made the town a point on an important inland shipping route, and its straight line is easy to spot on a map.
