Nikki is a town in Borgou department in northeastern Benin, not far from the Nigerian border. The land around it is open savanna, with farmland, scattered woodland and villages linked by tracks. On a map, the town appears as a compact centre with roads reaching out across this landscape, and a looser pattern of compounds and lanes toward the edges.
Nikki is the historic seat of the Bariba kingdom of the same name, and the court of its king remains an important institution. Each year the town hosts the Gaani, a festival of the Bariba people marked by horsemen and royal ceremony, which draws visitors from across the region and gives Nikki a cultural weight beyond its size.
