Nizhnesortymskiy Map Poster & Print
Nizhnesortymskiy is an urban-type settlement in the Surgut district of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, in the heart of the West Siberian oil region. It was built as a base for the oilfields around it. On a map, it forms a compact, planned grid of residential blocks and service areas in the middle of a very large, almost roadless landscape.
The surroundings are mostly taiga, bog and countless small lakes. From above they appear as a scatter of irregular shapes and winding streams that extend in every direction. A few roads and industrial routes lead out toward the fields and pipelines, and they are straight lines in an otherwise natural pattern. The settlement's clear outline makes its isolation very visible.
A Nizhnesortymskiy map poster suits people who have lived and worked in the north: oil workers, their families and those who grew up in the settlement before moving elsewhere in Russia. It records a place created by industry in a harsh environment, and the contrast between planned streets and wild wetland is striking.

Lakes and bogs
Countless small lakes and marshes surround the town. On the poster they create an intricate, scattered texture across the frame.
Roads into the taiga
A few straight roads lead out toward the oilfields. They are thin lines crossing wetland and forest, and they show how remote the place is.
