Nochistlán de Mejía sits in the southern reaches of Zacatecas, close to the Jalisco border, on high ground broken by ravines and farm tracks. From above, the town shows the clear Spanish colonial plan. Blocks line up around a central square and the church, then loosen into irregular lanes as the terrain folds away at the edges.
The town has a place in early colonial history. It is one of the sites linked to the first founding of Guadalajara in the 1530s, before the city moved to its present valley. It has since been named one of Mexico's Pueblos Mágicos, a recognition of its preserved centre and regional traditions.
