Novo Mesto is the main town of Dolenjska in southeastern Slovenia, and its shape on the map is unmistakable. The Krka River loops almost all the way around a rocky promontory, and the medieval town fills that peninsula, with its long main square running up the slope. From above, the river traces a near-circle around the historic core, and bridges cross it to the newer districts.
At the top of the old town stands the chapter church of St Nicholas, now a cathedral, and its position on the height makes it the natural focal point of the plan. Duke Rudolf IV of Habsburg founded the town in 1365, and it grew as the market centre for the region. Its compact streets still show that medieval structure clearly.
Novo Mesto is also known for archaeology. Excavations nearby uncovered a remarkable collection of Iron Age situlae, decorated bronze vessels, which earned it the nickname city of situlae. Main square
The long Glavni trg climbs the peninsula from the river toward the cathedral. It is a broad open space surrounded by narrow blocks that follow the lie of the land.
Bridges across the Krka
Road and rail bridges connect the peninsula to the districts on the opposite banks. These short lines stitch the old town into the wider modern city spread over the hills.
