Ntcheu is a district town in Malawi's Central Region, on the high ground between Lilongwe and the southern cities of Zomba and Blantyre. The M1, the country's main north–south road, passes through, and on a map the town lines up along it. Shops and markets cluster near the road, and residential areas spread away on either side.
The border with Mozambique lies just to the west, and for a stretch of the district the main road runs right beside it, so that settlements in the two countries sit only a short distance apart. Around the town the landscape is hilly and cultivated, and small farms, footpaths and scattered homesteads create a fine, irregular network of lines.
The district's upland position gives it a cooler climate than the lakeshore and the Shire valley, and farming shapes much of daily life, with produce sold at markets along the road. The Mozambique border runs close by to the west, in places right beside the main road. It leaves little mark on the ground yet shapes the geography of the whole region.
