Oberá is the second city of the Argentine province of Misiones, in the hilly country between the Paraná and Uruguay rivers. The town is built across a series of low hills, so its street grid is not quite regular. Blocks tilt and stretch as they follow the ridges, and streams in the small valleys between them leave green gaps in the built-up area.
The town was settled largely by European immigrants in the early twentieth century, including Scandinavians, Germans, Ukrainians, Poles and others. That history is celebrated every year at the Fiesta Nacional del Inmigrante, and Oberá is known as the national capital of the immigrant. Churches and community halls of different traditions still stand across town.
Around the edges the grid gives way to rural roads running through tea plantations, yerba mate fields and patches of forest. An Oberá map poster captures a grid laid over rolling terrain, with its edges loosening into farmland on every side.
