Ostrołęka lies on the Narew in north-eastern Mazovia, at the edge of the Kurpie region with its forests and sandy plains. The river shapes the whole map. It curves through the town in a broad valley, with the centre on one bank and newer districts spreading out on the other, linked by road bridges.
The town is remembered in Polish history for the Battle of Ostrołęka in 1831, one of the largest engagements of the November Uprising. Today it is a regional centre, and the large power station on its outskirts is one of its most visible landmarks. The old market square and the streets around it keep a compact, traditional layout.
