Owase lies on the eastern coast of the Kii Peninsula in Mie Prefecture. The map explains the town's shape right away: a narrow strip of flat land along Owase Bay, backed by steep, heavily forested mountains. Streets fill the small plain tightly, the harbour takes up the waterfront, and the roads that leave town have to twist through valleys or tunnel through ridges.
The town is known in Japan as one of the rainiest places in the country, and the wet climate supports the dense cedar and cypress forests around it. Fishing and forestry have long been the main industries. The Iseji route of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage network passes through the area, crossing the mountain passes on either side.
