Palenque sits in northern Chiapas, where the flat lowlands meet the first forested hills of the Sierra. From above, the modern town is a neat grid of streets and blocks on level ground, with a main road leading west toward the dense green slopes that hide the ancient site.
The ruins of Palenque, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lie a few kilometres outside the town. Its Temple of the Inscriptions holds the tomb of the ruler K’inich Janaab’ Pakal, one of the most celebrated finds in Maya archaeology.
