Paranda sits on the dry upland of the Deccan plateau in Maharashtra's Dharashiv district, and from above it reads as a small, dense knot of streets surrounded by wide agricultural land. The town plan has no rigid grid. Lanes bend and branch around the older core, and village roads leave it at irregular angles toward neighbouring settlements.
The town's best-known feature is Paranda Fort, a medieval stronghold with thick walls, bastions and a surrounding moat. On a map its geometry stands apart from everything around it: a closed, angular shape set against the looser pattern of houses and lanes. For a period in the early seventeenth century Paranda also served as a seat of the Nizam Shahi rulers of Ahmadnagar.

The fortified outline anchors the composition, the town's lanes fill in around it, and the thinning lines at the edges show where Paranda gives way to fields.
