Pernik lies in western Bulgaria, about thirty kilometres southwest of Sofia, in a valley along the upper Struma river. From above, the city stretches along the valley floor, and its outline is shaped by the hills that rise on either side, including the slopes of Golo Bardo and the approaches to Vitosha.
The centre is compact, but the urban area extends in a long form, with residential districts of Socialist-era blocks spread along the river and roads. Former coal mining areas and industrial sites leave large irregular shapes in and around the city, and a railway line follows the valley.
Pernik grew as a coal mining city from the late nineteenth century. It is widely known for the Surva festival of masquerade games, held each January, with costumed kukeri dancers.
