Pamporovo lies in the central Rhodope Mountains of southern Bulgaria, north of the town of Smolyan. From above it is a compact resort set in dense spruce forest. Its hotels are grouped along a few curving roads, and its pistes run as pale ribbons through the trees. The highest point, Snezhanka peak, is easy to find on the map because of the television tower on its summit.
Pamporovo is often called one of the sunniest ski areas in Europe, thanks to its southern position not far from the Greek border. Its gentle, tree-lined runs have long made it popular with beginners and families. The Rhodopes themselves carry old legends and are traditionally linked with Orpheus, the mythical singer of ancient Thrace.

A winding mountain road leads south from the resort toward Smolyan, threading through valleys and small settlements and tying Pamporovo into the wider Rhodope landscape.
